In the early hours of Friday April 29 the lights came back on in the James Bay New Horizons activity centre as a small group of seniors gathered, shortly after midnight, to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. We came wearing our pyjamas (after all it was the middle of the night) and fancy hats (a British wedding requires you to wear some kind of concoction on your head). We came to drink tea and eat scones as we watched the guests gather at Westminster Abbey.
From our comfortable seats in New Horizons we watched the people lining the streets near Buckingham Palace to try and get a glimpse of the royal couple while other people gathering in the parks around London watched the wedding on large TV screens. I know we had a better view than most of the people lining the mall in front of the palace, and I'm sure we were more relaxed and warmer than those gathered in Hyde Park. The wedding, of course, was spectacular. A handsome prince and his beautiful bride -- that's the stuff fairy tales are made of. But this was real. Reality TV at its best!
After the Royal couple were wed, paraded and had sealed their vows with a couple of kisses on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, our little group at New Horizons celebrated with breakfast. A tasty quiche and the requisite wedding cake topped with large colourful roses were on the menu. Finally, as daylight crept into the sky and the rest of Victoria was waking up to go to work, we headed to our homes for some much needed sleep.
