The Air We Breathe

This month’s cover reproduces a slide from the James Bay Air Quality Study. The map of James Bay is not a “snapshot” in time, but rather illustrates maximum estimated 24-hour sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration (in micro-milligrams of pollutant per meter of air cubed) during the modeling period. The shaded areas illustrate estimated SO2 concentrations, a range from 10-20 micro-milligrams (overall Victoria) to 20-30 micro-milligrams (light orange) which stretches across the harbour into the downtown, 20-30 micro-milligrams (dark orange) and 40-50 micro-milligrams (red) concentrated at the Ogden Point docks. These concentrations occur in about 3% of the 24 hour periods modelled during the cruise season.
