The students in Grade 4 and 5 were studying issues around whaling in First Nations culture. They were asked to take a position on the following question: "Do you think the Nuu-chuh-nulth people should be allowed to return to their tradition of whaling?"

I think that the Nuu-chah-nulth's should not be able to start whaling again because if the Nuu-chah-nulths start whaling again maybe the other cultures will start whaling too and kill more than they need and then the whales will almost be extinct.  My evidence from the text is that it said "In 1860's American whalers started killing the grey whales in such huge numbers", and that "many people fear for the future of the whales", so if they start whaling again then maybe the whales will become EXTINCT!

I think the Nuu-chah-nulth should be allowed to hunt whales again.  It's part of their traditions, and they don't need to hunt that many whales.  In the 1860's American whalers began hunting the whales to extinction.  By the 1930's, all whaling was stopped.  However, it wasn't the Nuu-chah-nulth's fault.  It was the hunters' fault.  They've put up with not whaling for 70 some-odd years, and they want their tradition back.

However, we need to maintain the whale populations.  Perhaps only people of Nuu-chah-nulth descent could hunt whales.  Possibly there could be a limit on how many they could hunt each year.  Or maybe they would have to report when they had a successful hunt?

Anyways, the Nuu-chah-nulth made it clear they want to hunt again.

What Bats Look Like - by Jordan

Bats have sharp teeth. Bats can be different colors. Bats have sharp claws. Some bats have big eyes. Some have small eyes. The flying fox bat is the biggest bat. That's what bats look like.

Purposes for Structures - by Derek

This is why people and animals build structures. Beavers build dams for a home. Bees build hives for homes. Those are some reasons for structures.
