James Bay Community Centre

By Leila Farmer
It was through the University of Victoria's co-op program that I came to work at the community centre and I am very pleased to return for another season of summer programs! One of the things I value most about my participation with the co-op program is the opportunity to work locally and to develop a relationship with the community of James Bay and the larger community of Victoria. My experience here has allowed me to learn about the strengths of the community school model and the way the centre and the community support one another.

This summer, through subsidy grants from Human Resources Development Canada, the centre was able to hire myself and two other co-op students. Throughout May and June, we have been involved in the summer programming and providing office assistance to the centre staff. In July and August we will see our planning in practice, as we will all be responsible for delivering the summer program.

On June 15th we all enjoyed the annual James Bay Community Picnic and would like to thank the community for its support!

In the summer anyone aged 10-14 is invited to register for Summer Dayz, a fantastic program that runs on Tuesdays from 11am-4pm starting July 5th and ending August 30th. Summer Dayz each cost $6 and begins July 5th and ends on August 30th. Trips to the beach for skim boarding, Elk Lake and a boffer battle are some of the outings planned!

Our Summer Adventures camps offer licensed day care to children aged 5-12 and runs Monday-Friday, starting July 4th and ending September 1st. We provide parents with two time blocks for care; the first from 7:30am-5:25pm, and the second is from 9:00am-4:30pm, depending on your schedule. Each week is planned around a different theme and your child will engage in these themes by exploring the city of Victoria and the surrounding area, as well as participating in fun on-site activities. We're all excited to begin our weekly adventures with "Sustainable Summer," as we are going to plant a garden, visit the Compost Education Centre and Ellice Recycle. If you are interested in learning more about Summer Adventures please see the front desk.

The 2011-2012 school year begins on September 6th and it is a short day that begins at 9:00am-11:30. Parents are reminded to register their children for classes. The school office will be open during its regular hours until July 8th and then again on Monday August 29th from 8:00am-3:30pm.

For parents requiring out of school care, the community centre offers care for children aged 5-12. Before school care is available at 7:30am and after school until 5:25. For parents with younger children, our Little Waves program is open to toilet trained 3-5 year olds and it runs Monday-Friday, from 8:00am-5:25pm. Please speak with our receptionist if you would like to register your children in any of these programs.

Preschool will continue in the fall and if you are interested in registering your 3-5 year old in an engaging and creative preschool program you can do so at the front desk. The classes run from 9:15-11:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays or Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays depending on your child's age.
We are all looking forward to a fantastic summer here at the centre, and wish the same for you!
