Summer has arrived. Whether or not the sun is ready to shine is another story, but warmth and enthusiasm is plentiful at James Bay New Horizons activity centre. Although most of our program instructors are taking time off during the summer, we will continue with drop-in programs and workshops throughout the season.

Of course we want to encourage everyone to keep up with their exercises, so our ASEL (Active Seniors Enjoying Life) chair aerobics program on Tuesday and Thursday mornings is a "must do" for a great number of our members. Every Monday at 10 a.m. our walking group meets at the Centre for a short briefing before heading out on their vigorous stroll to various Victoria destinations, ending up at a neighbourhood café for lunch. And speaking of sitting down - whether it's for a lively discussion or some gaming fun -- Current Affairs, Men's Get-together, Bridge, Bingo, and Euchre are all continuing as well.

Two new programs to be added this summer are a Wednesday afternoon "Movie and Popcorn," and "Focus on Friday" will give you an opportunity to come to the Centre and hear and see presentations from experts and specialists in a variety of areas. These may include such topics as websites for seniors, humanitarian travel, healing and meditation, self-defense and much more. There will be various workshops including greeting card making and a make-up seminar entitled "Put Your Best Face Forward" by Kat from James Bay Pharmasave.

As always, a hot lunch, prepared by the chefs of Beckley Farm Lodge, is being served to members on Tuesday, while Grilligan's donates a huge pot of chili every week for our Thursday lunch which is open to everyone and also includes a hot beverage and dessert for only $3.

We hope you will take the opportunity to drop in, say hello and pick up our weekly bulletin so you won't miss any of the summer activities at the Centre.

We would like to thank the City of Victoria for the updates to the front of our building. We also owe a special thanks to Christine Simcoe for all her hard work and support in planting and cleaning up our front garden area.

Fundraising has now started so we can have a canopy installed over our front door. We are also hoping to have a mural painted for the front of our building. It will show our community spirit, and the members are excited about this project.

We have some special fundraising activities planned for the fall. Mark September 26th on your calendar for our first fun event!

Invite your family on Friday, November 4th for "A Tribute to Red Skelton" with renowned entertainer Al Greenwood. Tickets will be $15 for non-member adults, $10 for members, and $5 for children. What a way to start the festive season with great entertainment for the whole family!

We hope that you enjoy the summer. Spend time with family and friends, enjoy the great entertainment at Beacon Hill Park and we hope to see you out and about.
