I am reminded of the many leaders in history, such as Hitler, Milosevic etc., who used the fear of  “other” people to deflect their fellow citizens from focusing on the real issues plaguing their particular country. By calling for the banning of the niqab, and developing a hotline for spying on our neighbours, it seems to me that Stephen Harper was trying to do the same thing. By using this cynical and dangerous ploy to deflect us from questioning his party’s policies regarding the environment, scientific research and information, health etc., he was pandering to our baser instincts.

Maybe we’re not comfortable with other people’s ideas or their practices, but to paraphrase Voltaire, I may not agree with your opinion, but I will defend to the death your right to voice it. I am very gratified to see that we Canadians stood up and refused to be manipulated.
