It has always been my understanding and belief that newspapers were ’non-partisan’ in their presentation of the news. However, whenever the James Bay Beacon reports on the annual arrival of the cruise ships at Ogden Point, the strong bias against them comes shining through. For my wife and I, we look forward to their arrival, as they bring a positive energy and joy to the community. Have you ever seen a ‘sad tourist’? We live on St. Lawrence Street and go out of our way to assist these ship-borne tourists with directions and anything else we can offer.

Despite the Beacon’s negative and biased view, these ships and their passengers bring a great deal of money and employment to our city. Should the cruise ship naysayers have their way - and this obviously includes this newspaper - Victoria would not be a port of call and a rather sizeable economic blow struck against our city.

Dear Reader,

The Beacon’s objective is to publish articles of interest to our readers. We welcome contributions from all members of our community, and we publish monthly submissions from a number of local organizations.

Columns and articles always clearly identify the contributing author writer or organization expressing controversial points of view. Make note of the contributor and appreciate that we are only the messenger.

We encourage responses such as yours and are happy to publish articles and letters representing the diverse opinions of James Bay residents.

Thank you,

The Editorial Board.
