The bicycle may be the closest we get to a ‘silver bullet.’ Cycling is, of course, great for your health, the environment and your wallet. Did you know bicycles are also one of quietest and most economically-accessible forms of transportation? And according to the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition “bikes mean business,” because cyclists shop more often that drivers, and cyclists shop locally because they transport their purchases on two-wheels.

Given these benefits, how can we make James Bay more bicycle-friendly? We live in the city’s most populous neighbourhood, surrounded by stunning scenery and beside the downtown. James Bay could (and should) be Victoria’s cycling hub. More cycling would benefit our residents and businesses, and would be a quieter, more sustainable strategy for visitors. There is a bicycle right for all ages, abilities and incomes. Visit one of Victoria’s 30-plus bike shops to see for yourself.

The key to being bicycle-friendly is infrastructure. A good start would be bike racks at Parliament Mews, Holland Point Park and at all neighbourhood restaurants. Rental bicycles at Ogden Point, and bike lanes on wider streets should be explored. As density and tourism grow, let’s become bicycle-friendly to ensure James Bay stays beautiful and vibrant.
