Today I walked down the ramp at Fisherman’s Wharf where businesses float. Although a few cruise ships have arrived and left, the season is still young, and it wasn’t as crowded as it is on a warm July evening. But children on the wharf stared into the water looking for the sealsand people sat at the tables around Barb’s Fish and Chips as well as the Mexican Food Restaurant, happily enjoying food, friends and families.
Fisherman’s Wharf’s reputation of fun and carefree living might originate partially from the community the businesses have created. Answering the question of why it’s fun to work at the Wharf, Sydney, who works at Eagle Wing Tours, said, “It’s outdoors; it’s friendly; we all know each other and we all say, ‘Hi!’
Katherine at Kelp Reef Kayaking and Hiking Tours enjoys the great mix of people; all walks of life can be found on the Wharf. She believes that the Wharf attracts a certain kind of person, those who love adventure! “Where else would you have the opportunity of taking people from Saudi Arabia kayaking?” she mused. Being a part of the surprising people and events at Fisherman’s Wharf totally interests her.
Across the wharf is a new business, 4 Winds, opening on the May long weekend. Natasha, a potter as well as the owner, is pleased to be at Fisherman’s Wharf. Having recently moved from Alberta, she and her husband are working together in this new venture. All of her inventory is Canadian except for some linens which she imports from France through family connections. Natasha loves Fisherman’s Wharf. She thinks it’s beautiful.
Mawrey, at Jackson’s Ice Cream said it simply and effectively: “It’s the most beautiful place in the city, if not on the whole island, and I meet lots of interesting people.”
Sammy, at the Mexican Food restaurant said it in two words: “sea and people.”
At Barb’s Fish and Chips, Maita concurred with Sydney: “All staff are super great people.”
“It’s fun because people are happy and stoked to see the seals while eating environmentally sustainable food.” That’s what Oliver at The Fish Store said.
At Grilligan’s, “where buoy meets grill,” the sentiment was the same: Great place to be!
With people like that, how could Fisherman’s Wharf be anything but a happy, relaxing place to enjoy the sea, the sun, and the people?
