A winner!

Congratulations to Terry Loeppky, winner of the Black and White photo contest.

This morning we met at Discovery Coffee where Terry told me he’d been taking pictures forever. He started in the 70s or early 80s with a thirty-five millimeter camera, but put it aside as other aspects of his life became more important.

Five years ago, Terry retired, bought an iPad and started travelling, but didn’t actually take many pictures with his new toy.  When he bought a Lumix, pocket-sized travel camera, he started to take more pictures, both while travelling and around town. That’s the camera he used to take the winning photograph.

A friend introduced him to Instagram where he posted many of his shots. And then he got interested in photography Apps for the iPad, allowing him to use his iPad to do the equivalent of post-production work in a dark room.

Terry was standing about two hundred meters away from the subject of his photograph; he zoomed in, snapped the picture, and downloaded it to his iPad. Using the latest photo app for the iPad, Terry created the picture that you’ve admired on the front page. What he wanted was a strong graphic shot that would create a dramatic black and white photograph.

Talking with Terry was fun, and toward the end of the conversation, he suggested a selfie of the two of us because it would be surprising to see the photographer with the reporter.  And that’s something you can judge for yourselves!

Congratulations, Terry!
