As we get older we may become more afraid of falling, for good reason. Falls occur with more frequency and can have debilitating consequences. Being fit, one way or another, helps. A study published in 2008 in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity (vol. 17, pp 123-130) compared a group of women aged 60-75 who lawn bowled regularly with a control group. There were 74 participants in the study. The results showed that the regular lawn bowlers had significantly better balance and muscle strength – major fall-prevention factors.

Not only do we want to be in good shape but also to enjoy our exercise. Lawn Bowling may help prevent falls but is it fun sport?

Here is what lawn bowlers say they like about it: being outdoors in fresh air and sunshine, meeting people, learning new skills, the quick-to-learn basics. Others like the option of daytime or evening play, and not being obliged to show up. You bowl when you want to. Some people enjoy tournaments for more competitive play. Others prefer cooperative games.

There are lots of other activities that get us moving. As Sharron, a James Bay businessperson whose passion is darts, says, “If you are out there having fun you’re a winner. If you win the game, that’s a bonus.” If you’re preventing falls, that’s another bonus!
