Mayor’s Grove
Mar 2015
By Anne Draper
Mayor's Grove located south of Quadra Street on Southgate and Arbutus Way was the site of a cheerful celebration Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 2:00 pm. A memorial ceremony of Sir Winston Churchill's death by Society members and interested public took place around a "Historic Hawthorne Tree" planted September 6, 1929 by the "Right Honourable Winston L. S. Churchill during a visit to Victoria. A tree that reminds one of the tenacity and toughness the late British statesman showed the world. A tree that Victoria City Parks staff have cared for and helped live a long life. Churchill died fifty years ago. You will find thirty-some numbered and named ceremonial trees in the Garry Oak meadow setting of our very own Beacon Hill Park with each tree telling its own story.
