It’s Civic Election time again. So, who really cares. Municipal elections don’t generally get much attention, but this year the stakes on November 15 are significantly higher.

First, all elected council positions are up for grab. The province has extended the length of terms from three years to four. In Victoria the position of Mayor, 8 councilors and 9 School Trustees (School District 61) will be on the ballot. It will be 2018 before you have a chance to kick the rascals out.

Second, the ballot will also include the question of municipality amalgamation. The ballot question is not binding but whichever the result will surely flavor any future discussion between greater Victoria municipalities on sharing of services if not amalgamation.

The City has made every effort to making the voting process accessible: mail-in ballots; early voting; convenient polling stations; extended polling station hours. The only thing missing is on-line.

The question this month, dear readers, is: What’s your excuse?
